On Monday 2 December, the New Zealand Government announced a confirmed outbreak of highly pathogenic avian influenza (HPAI) at one commercial egg farm in the South Island region of Otago.
The outbreak is being closely managed by New Zealand’s Ministry for Primary Industries and Biosecurity New Zealand, with extensive measures in place to eradicate it and prevent it from spreading beyond the one property where the outbreak has happened.
Under international food safety protocols, this means that the export of all chicken and egg products from New Zealand are temporarily suspended until the outbreak is eradicated. This includes products currently being shipped to international markets.
We do not know how long it will take for the suspension to be lifted.
